Something for the weekend

06Apr07

(Bonus points if you know the English band with the song of the same name)

Looks like we’re in for one of the most exciting finishes in a long time. With home ice and final playoff spots still up in the air, lots o’ wackiness can happen over the next three days. All eyes are on Saturday, where a full slate of games can turn everything around.

All eyes, that is, except mine. Despite the miracle of Center Ice, I’ll be at the Sharks game in the afternoon, then pretty much after that, playing in my beer league championship game. So, I’ll miss a lot of the fun, though I have my Sunday blocked off to watch the final games of the regular season should they wind up as determining factors. It’s too bad, since the Oilers/Flames game should be a doozy on Saturday night.

The main storylines for Saturday:

  • IF Toronto beats Montreal and the Islanders beat Philly, then the Islanders can get into 8th on Sunday.
  • IF Dallas beats Anaheim in regulation on Friday, then San Jose can push for a Pacific Division title on Saturday against Vancouver.
  • IF Nashville gets one point against Colorado on Saturday, they’ll seal up home ice.
  • IF Edmonton beats Calgary and Colorado gets a win in Nashville, that sets up a game-7 scenario for Sunday.

Some other random thoughts on this final weekend of the season:

  • The West will have at least seven teams with over 100 points. The East will have four. Assuming Buffalo doesn’t run the table in the East, looks like home ice is a good bet for whoever wins the West.
  • If Colorado makes the 8th spot, they’ll basically be the hottest team in the league going into the playoffs. And they’ll most likely take on Detroit and Todd Bertuzzi. That will be some good fun.
  • There’s a pretty darn good chance of Atlanta and Tampa Bay in the first round. Think that’ll spark a good Southeast Rivalry?
  • Not a lot of people noticed, but the sad-sack Blues actually pulled into a reasonable 10th place. That’s really not too shabby considering how awful they were in the first half.
  • On the other hand, the Phoenix Coyotes were actually IN the playoffs halfway through the season, then they tanked all the way to last in the West.

That’s it for today, folks. Enjoy a full slate of awesome Saturday games — and go Red Army (my beer league team)!

[Update] If you’re plopped on the couch for a full day of Center Ice madness on Saturday, then make sure you get the laptop pointed over to the Battle of New York. Steve, the resident Devils fan, will be liveblogging all day from 1PM EST to the end of Vancouver/Calgary, so be sure to check it out for regular updates.

By the way, the band The Divine Comedy sang Something For The Weekend.

Actually, all Buffalo needs is 2 points in their last 2 games to win the President’s Trophy. Seeing how those two games are against the Caps and Flyers, I’d bet my money that they get those 2 points.

Just to clarify, I meant that if Buffalo didn’t make it to the Cup finals, then the West has a good chance at home ice.

Ah, right then. Sorry for the confusion.
